Hump Day Crush

Okay.  So I have gotten a bit of 'playoff' fever.  Both series are crazy and I had a toss up this week between the Lebron puppet and the dude I finally decided on.  But it was no contest after thinking about it.  My crush of the week is Chris "the Birdman" Anderson.  Yes, he has ridiculous hair, terrible chin fuzz, an absurd amount of wings tattooed on his body...but he has crazy attitude, plays with heart and is a spark plug for his team.  He is also an interesting story of getting his life together and back in the NBA after being suspended for violating their substance abuse policy.  And to be honest, he actually looks better with the gelled mohawk - dude off the court was pulling his best Backstreet Boy comb-forward do which I am not down with.  I am rooting for the Nuggets, and not just because Kobe bugs me - but to see what the Nuggets and the Birdman can do. xx

Here it is, a groove slightly transformed, just a little of a break from the norm...

Memorial Day - what better way to kick off the summer than watching the Yankees vs. the World Champ Phillies on a beautiful day in the Bronx?  I don't even like the Yankees that much, but the game was fun and the new stadium was crazy.  Huge, clean and new.  Cushioned stadium seats, built in cup holders, actual leg room and futuristic clean bathrooms.
This was the true view from our seats, 5 rows back from the field, right behind Nick Swisher in right field.
Jeter and the boys warming up, doing some wind sprints.
And of course the food.  There are all of the stadium staples - $10 beers, chicken fingers and fries.  You have to try the garlic fries (be prepared since they are seriously smelly) and they also had cheese steaks (good but could have been better).

Of course with my luck, I managed to be in the bathroom during Jeter's homer, but the Yanks closed in on the Phillies 2 run lead in spectacular fashion in the 9th to win the game.  There was a giant cloud over the stadium while the Yankees were down, but miraculously the sun started to shine and A-Rod (A-Roid) hit a homer to tie the game.  It was the best game I have been too and I don't even like the Yankees that much.  Will have to make it to CitiField next...xx

Hump Day Crush

I am over everyone and everything this week and am not inspired to deem anyone crush-worthy. It has been a rough week... xx

Hump Day Crush

Diego Luna.  Sexy while scruffy, boyish cuteness when cleaned up, his accent, plus he's funny in two languages?  Count me in.  I am all about Diego Luna this week.  I had forgotten how cute he is since 'Y Tu Mama Tambien', but I was quickly reminded when I saw him and Gael Garcia Bernal promoting their new movie 'Rudo Y Cursi' on the late night talk show circuit.  I know I am probably in the minority since a lot of ladies I know dig on Gael Garcia Bernal, I like him with the glasses in the above pic, but I would choose Diego Luna any day of the week. xx

You go and call yourself the boss, but we're not robots inside a grid...

Or are we?  At Union Square this weekend, some shiny machines that were making a lot of sucking air noises at the top of the stairs of the uptown N,R.  The sticker is blurry in the pic, but reads DEP - Department of Environmental Protection.  Who knows something that we should? xx

Me and my Adidas do the illest things, like stomping out pimps with diamond rings...

Sneaker Wars.  I am not talking about 35th anniversary limited edition Run DMC Superstars, Jordan 1s or the fight for Pigeon Dunks, I am talking about the family battle that spawned the creation of Adidas and Puma, and shaped modern sports as we know it today.  The book follows the Dassler family, the two feuding German brothers who once worked together, only to break off to create Adidas (Adi Dassler) and Puma (Rudi Dassler) and their willingness to do anything in order to succeed (and beat the other).  Family feuds that crossed generations, betrayal, Nazi ties, corporate espionage, payola, arranged 'customs delays', wire tapping, the creation of secret companies, crazy wheeling and dealing - these two brothers had a major hand in creating sports marketing, sponsored athletes and casual sports influenced clothing as we know it today.  It makes for a juicy story and a new perspective when lacing up my kicks. xx

Hump Day Crush...revised edition

This Wednesday I feel the serious need to update a previous Hump Day Crush - instead of crushing on fictional character Sidney Fife, I am changing my tune and crushing on Jason Segel.  Okay, I still don't like him as Marshall, but after reading this interview in an old Elle (click the pic to enlarge), Mr. Segel totally won me over.  He talks about how the naked break-up scene in 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' was based on his own experience, about the outfit he chose for the last half of that break-up (preppy khakis, blue button down).  How he spoke-sang 'Ain't to Proud to Beg' to his ex-girlfriend in an attempt to win her back.  About his love for puppets and how he thought Fozzie Bear would get the most tail.  And the kicker, was how he watched Tears of Endearment with a hot girl in a hotel room and couldn't stop crying for an hour and a half.  A combo of a sensitive-weirdo/extremely funny/likable/tall cutie, I can't resist and ain't too proud to beg. xx

NYCity I'm the mayor, but I got a key to the city everywhere...

Just an FYI, Metrocards make it through an industrial strength warm wash and a super hot tumble dry and still work.  I learned this via default experiment while doing laundry (it was an unlimited, if that makes any difference). xx

When I grow up, I'll turn the tables...

This weekend was a busy one!  Saturday started with a ferry ride, a Japanese supermarket, a NJ mall, the Kentucky Derby (50 to 1!), Game 7 (boo to the Celtics winning) and ended with Pacquiao v. Hatton (Manny was so sick).  My rainy Sunday was capped off by a NYTimes lecture series with Thakoon, Maria Cornejo and Narciso Rodriguez that was moderated by the Times' fashion critic Cathy Horyn, focusing on First Lady Michele Obama's style.
All three designers have dressed the First Lady and shared their thoughts on some of her sartorial choices:
-the black cardigan worn over the Narciso black/red dress worn on election night (Narciso thought the addition of the cardigan was cool, something a real woman would do when she was cold)
-the jacquard coat/dress by Thakoon worn to the First Lady 'face-off' with Carla Bruni in France (Thakoon was with his Grandmother in Thailand with slow dial-up internet when he found up, and the suspense of her pic loading was too much)
-Maria Cornejo spoke on her clothes being liked by the First Lady since it is a more accessible price point, and being more everyday wear for the First Lady (though I loved her comment about the First Lady wearing $600 Lanvin sneakers - she can spend her money how she wants since she earned it, and is balanced by giving back to the community).

The most interesting moment was when they opened the floor to questions.  A young girl around 12, asked the panel what it took to be a designer. Narciso's instant answer was don't do it! Then he revised and said that's what he tells everyone and it takes hard work...Maria pitched in and said it takes hard work and it is not glamorous at all.
From my experiences, I totally understand where he was coming from, and the industry is rarely glamourous, but I couldn't help but wonder if his instant response crushed a little girl's dream.  I really hope not, and that she will make her decision on her own someday. xx
